NBA Draft, Trade Season, Free Agency — Big week ahead for the Mavs

Ok y’all, this thing is about to come to a head quickly. We’ve talked for for a long time now about how crucial this offseason is going to be for the Mavs. They already made a necessary change at GM by letting Donnie Nelson go and brining in Nico Harrison, a guy who the Lakers and other franchise pursued but weren’t able to land him. Now it’s time to make some necessary changes to the Mavs’ roster. The NBA Draft is coming up on Thursday night, and although the Mavs don’t currently have any picks, the draft also symbolizes ‘Trade Season’ opening up again. Then, exactly one week from today, we have Free Agency opening up. There are SO many routes the Mavs can take, but what do we think they’ll end up doing? My gut tells me that there’s going to be some Mavs trades this week involving guys like Josh Richardson and Dwight Powell… and *maybe* even Kristaps Porzingis, but we’ll see. I think the Mavs already have a Tim Hardaway Jr. deal in place and ready to go, and so now they will look at ways to offload other salary so they can still add more talent without letting THJ walk. I have a few scenarios in mind that I will elaborate on later in this thread, but I just wanted to get this thing started with my first post in our revamped DBcom boards. Excited to be back! Let me know you’re ideal Mavs scenarios heading into these next 4-7 days.

DALTON IS BACK!

Even without the picks, this is going to be a very exciting couple of weeks in Mavs land.

I can't wait for my boy Goran to finally sign on the dotted line

i agree about THJ being 'agreement in principle.'' ... are we worried that might be a clog?

I think Dragić is actually a very real possibility given what we think about THJ’s potential new deal + Miami wanting to chase other FA. I imagine they’ll decline his team option to have more flexibility. The Igor hiring was big for these hopes too. Could see Dragić wanting to finish his career in Dallas.

THJ’s cap hold is $28M if I’m not mistaken. If he signs for say, $20M/yr, and the Mavs are successfully able to offload Powell & J-Rich, that would keep some FA flexibility open. I don’t think you could sign THJ to that kind of deal and still get a Kawhi, but you could still definitely make room to add a couple more valuable pieces — maybe a Spencer Dinwiddie, a Nerlens Noel reunion, etc.

So are we under the assumption That Bill Simmons will claim he was the first on the Cade Cunningham train like he did with Luka?

Here is some interesting info from the Wizards beat writer @ChaseHughesNBCS that connnects Beal to Dallas.

"As Beal mulls his future, which the Athletic reported could result in a decision this week, there are several teams considered more intriguing than others, according to someone familiar with Beal’s thinking including the Warriors, Heat, Celtics, Blazers, Lakers and Mavericks"

That's interesting! Would be really fascinated to know what the Lakers and Blazers would be offering in a potential deal. Can't imagine LA has much of anything at all to entice a deal.

I almost feel like if you don't put the Lakers in as a trade destination possibility people wont even pay attention to you these days.

for Lakers, it would have to be THT + KuZMa + future picks. What really interesting in the article is that Oklahoma is willing to be the 3rd team to faciliate a trade. Can't see Westbrook going back there as a salary dump

What do the Mavs have that OKC would want? Not a rhetorical question. Outside of KP I can't think of much.
